The sermon “Christ’s Fidelity: The Only Shield against Satan’s Malignity” encouraged the people of Salem to “put on the whole armor of God” since he was “commanded to call and cry an alarm unto you.” His militant language helped stir up the passions of a community entering a witch hunt. In , Lawson wrote another account of the Salem Witch Trials, a sermon titled “Christ’s Fidelity the only Shield against Satan’s Malignity,” aka “Witchcraft in Salem,” which was published in London in ♦ Robert Pike Letter to Judge Jonathan Corwin.
The only way to quench Satan’s darts is with the shield of faith — faith in Christ. So, how do you pick up that shield and use it? 4. Turn to Jesus Christ. The shield is a shield of faith, and faith means trusting all that God has promised to be for us in Jesus Christ. So, turn your heart to Jesus Christ. (2.) Christ fore-arms them against these approaching troubles, [1.] By his counsel: Fear none of these things. This is not only a word of command, but of efficacy, no, only forbidding slavish fear, but subduing it and furnishing the soul with strength and courage. [2.] By showing them how their sufferings would be alleviated and limited.
